Designing With A Purpose
The concussion patient was the #1 priority when designing wwww.CANrecover.org because they often face sensitivity to light as well as difficulty with screens and processing information. Student-athletes with concussions helped determine every key element of the site to ensure CAN Recover delivered the best experience for its audience.
Viewer Options
“Viewer Options” (top left corner of your screen) is a critical feature that enables optimal viewing options for concussion patients and those supporting them. Each option is strategically designed for if you…
have a concussion (D)
- best design (for the majority)
- dark (D) grey background with white text: reduces screen brightness significantly
- larger arial font: the most readable font
have a concussion (L)
- best design (for a lot of others)
- light (L) grey background with black text: more natural for the brain to process while still reducing brightness
- larger arial font: the most readable font
know someone
- best design for parents, friends, coaches, etc. (NOT for concussion patients)
- light blue color scheme: produces calming chemicals in the brain
- serif font: elegant, flowing typeface that helps calm the mind
Click “Viewer Options” at any time to select the optimal design for your viewing experience.
Other Strategic Design Decisions
- Minimal Scrolling: to-the-point content, page layout, and site navigation reduce page length
- Limited Animation: no slider, no accordions, no flashy animation (only tabs for the “I Am A…” pages to minimize scrolling)
- Low Contrast: enough to ease processing content, but subtle enough to avoid brightness variation
